After the war the express highway movement gained momentum, slowly at first because of financial difficulties and the urgency of postwar reconstruction, then more rapidly. By eight U.S. states had toll roads that met express highway standards and totaled more than. The Express Lanes don’t have toll booths, meaning that there isn’t an option to pay cash on the Express Lanes. Motorcycles don’t need an E-ZPass®. If traveling with an E-ZPass® of any type, our system will identify the vehicle as a motorcycle and the account won’t be charged.

Toll roads, unlike express lanes, are not just designed to manage congestion. Tolls are a way to pay for the road, while adding new capacity. What traditional toll roads and express lanes have in common is choice – drivers can choose to travel the express lanes for the posted toll price, or use the general-purpose lanes.
